Suburb Signage Competition

  • Four local schools took part in our Suburb Signage Competition, 2011. Judges had a hard time choosing between the superb entries received so decided to award two categories 5-8 yrs and 9-12 yrs. Three children received awards in each category and a Highly Commended was also awarded. Medals, made by local business The Trophy Store, were handed to the childrern by Linda Burney, Canterbury MP.

The competition was part of the Chamber’s Public Forum, where the community and local businesses were invited to come along and air their views on what they would like to see in the area. Over 30 people attended including the late Barbara Holborow, former NSW Children’s Magistrate and local resident, with great feedback which was passed onto councils for their information.

All were treated to a fantastic meal at the ExServicemens Club afterwards.

Business in the Spotlight

  • Business in the Spotlight September saw a series of Cheese and Wine nights over four Fridays, hosted by La Bocca Deli Cafe and WineGifts.com.au. Initiated by Croydon Park Business Chamber, over 100 people attended in total, all of whom filled in Customer Feedback Forms, providing invaluable feedback to the two businesses in question.

The aim of this initiative is to partner a small business who may not have access to exposure to the general public, with a main street business. The Chamber is constantly looking at new ways of bringing business to the area, and helping improve the trade of our local businesses.

If you wish to be part of this exciting initiative, contact one of the Board Members for details

Local Business’ Charity Efforts

  • Chamber members, Pure Gelato of Croydon Park, held their annual 10/10 charity fundraiser for Children’s Cancer and raised over $26,000! This company not only produces the best gelato in Sydney, but really know how to put on a show for all the family. Of course, the best part was seeing Joe get dumped into hundreds of litres of gelato!

Croydon Park Business Chamber Highly Commended

  • The Croydon Park Business Chamber was highly commended for the work it does at a lavish ceremony to celebrate business achievements at La Montage Lilyfield on Friday 28 September 2012.  The event was organised and hosted by the NSW Business Chamber and recognised achievements in a number of categories.

Croydon Park Business Chamber celebrated these achievements in style with the local businesses and community at La Bocca Deli Café a few days later, at the final Business in the Spotlight Cheese & Wine tasting event.

NSW Small Business Commissioner listening tour and consultation

  • As part of its pre-election policy Small Business Action Plan, the NSW Government established a NSW Small Business Commissioner to support small businesses throughout the State.

    The Commissioner supports businesses by:

    providing low-cost dispute resolution services
advising Government on how best to provide assistance to small businesses
identifying ways in which Government can create a climate in which the small business sector can flourish.

Ms Yasmin King was appointed by the Minister for Small Business as the State’s first Small Business Commissioner in August 2011.

Since starting her role, the Commissioner has already assisted many small business operators with issues impacting on their businesses and has been able to achieve many effective outcomes with the cooperation and good faith of the parties involved.

However, despite these successes, not all cases will be able to be solved through the goodwill of the parties involved. In these circumstances, the Commissioner will require the support of a legislative framework in order to assist in the resolution of disputes and issues facing the small business sector. Legislation will provide the tools that will allow the Commissioner to meet the objectives of the role and deliver outcomes for small businesses in NSW.

Legislation to formally establish the role and functions of the Commissioner is proposed to be developed by the NSW Government. As part of this process, the Office of the Small Business Commissioner will be seeking feedback on the proposed provisions outlined in the consultation paper.

We want to hear from you

We are now seeking your suggestions about what role and functions of the Commissioner you want to see established in legislation, and what tools the Commissioner should have that will help small business operators in the most practical way.
It is important that we hear from you directly about your vision for the role of the Commissioner so that we can develop legislation that will help the Commissioner carry out the role most effectively.

The Commissioner will also be undertaking a Listening Tour in locations across the State to hear directly from small businesses as part of the consultation process.
Listening Tour dates for June and July 2012
